All Mercedes cars manufactured after 1995 are fitted with an immobiliser unit that prevents the engine from being switched on unless it recognizes a small glass transponder chip embedded in the key. The transponder chip embedded in all Mercedes keys made after 1995 is electronically programmed to communicate electronically with the immobiliser unit. When the immobiliser unit correctly recognizes the key inserted into the ignition lock, it disengages and allows the engine to be switched on.
If the transponder chip in the key is not recognized by the immobiliser unit, it will not disengage and the car cannot be driven away.
This means that, in addition to cutting a new key, it is also necessary to programme the glass chip inside the key specifically to the immobiliser unit of your car. This requires the extraction of electronic data from your car’s computer system.
